Signing by text message

Send the link to their phone. That is where they are.

Email gets to a desk. A guest booking a trip for Saturday is not at a desk, and the message that gets read is the one that arrives on the thing in their hand.

What this document is

A signing link delivered by SMS, to a mobile number, with the delivery and the number recorded as part of the evidence.

Also called: text to sign · SMS signature link · text message waiver · mobile signing link

Where it goes wrong

Not a feature list. These are the three moments this exists for.

The email that is opened on Tuesday

The trip is Saturday, the reminder went out Thursday, and the person is on holiday and reading almost nothing. The document that needs signing today is at the bottom of a list of forty.

The number nobody recorded

You have the phone number of whoever booked. The other people on the trip exist only as a count, so the reminder can only go to one person and be about everybody.

Texting from a personal phone

It works until the member of staff leaves, or until somebody replies STOP and nothing happens, or until you need to show what was sent.

What happens instead

1

One message, one link, one person

Each signer gets their own, so the reminder about the missing signature goes to the person who has not signed it.

2

The delivery is part of the record

Which number, when, and whether the carrier took it. The certificate carries the same.

3

The compliance parts done once, properly

STOP and HELP handled, the opt-out honoured, the published disclosures matching what the engine actually sends — checked by tests rather than by memory.

Texting costs money and carriers have rules

SMS is metered per segment because it is metered to us per segment, and the rate is on the pricing page rather than hidden in a plan. Carriers also decide what may be sent to a number and how consent must be recorded, and a business that ignores that gets its traffic blocked rather than fined — which is why the opt-out is not optional here.

Who sends this one

The same document, sent by businesses that have nothing else in common.

Questions

Do we need our own number?

No. Messages go from SignSealer's verified number and say who they are from. A business that wants its own sending identity is a different conversation and a different compliance registration.

What happens when somebody replies STOP?

They stop receiving texts, immediately and permanently until they say otherwise, and the record shows it. Anything else is both rude and a carrier violation.

Is a text link less secure than an email one?

It is a single-use link either way, and both can be strengthened by requiring a one-time code before the signer consents. What the certificate records is which channel was used, so the evidence is honest about it rather than flattening the difference.
